Prof. Reinhard Klein von der Universität Bonn kommt an die Hochschule. Der Vortrag ist Teil des Informatikkolloquiums des Forschungsschwerpunkt Visual Computing. Thema des Vortrags: Towards a perceptually parameterized BTF- material space wann: 12. Januar 2012, 16:30 Uhr wo: C116 Abstract: The efficient realistic modelling and rendering of complex materials such as fabric, leather or skin is still one of the main challenges in computer graphics. The difficulty arises from the complex meso structure and reflectance behaviour defining the unique look-and-feel of a material. A wide class of materials can be described as 2D-texture under varying light- and view direction namely the Bidirectional Texture Function (BTF). Since an easy and general method for modeling BTFs is currently not available, research concentrates on image-based methods which rely on measured BTFs (acquired real-world data) in combination with appropriate synthesis methods. This approach greatly improves the visual quality of rendered surfaces. After introducing the basic techniques for the main tasks involved in producing photo-realistic renderings using measured BTFs this talk will present some ideas towards a perceptually parametrized BTF material space that allow the user to navigate easily between different materials. Vita: Reinhard Klein studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Tübingen, Germany, from where he received his MS in Mathematics (Dipl.-Math.) in 1989 and his PhD in computer science in 1995. In 1999 he received an appointment as lecturer (“Habilitation”) in computer science also from the University of Tübingen, with a thesis in computer graphics. In September 1999 he became an Associate Professor at the University of Darmstadt, Germany and head of the research group Animation and Image Communication at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics. Since October 2000 he is professor at the University of Bonn and director of the Institute of Computer Science II.
